| Video Discription | On the 14th of JUly 2016 an impressive display of ice crystal halos was observed across the United Kingdom , including the rare 46° halo and possibly a Parry arc. The other phenomena observed were Parhelia, commonly known as sundogs. There are the most frequently seen effect of ice crystals, even so they were very prominent that evening, certainly the brightest I have seen them. Extending from the sundogs away from the sun parts of the Parhelic circle can be seen, and extending from the sundogs a faint halo around the sun, this i is the 22° halo, at the top of the halo directly above the sun is the Upper Tangent arc. Higher above that almost overhead is what appears to be an upside down rainbow is the circumzenithal arc. Then we come to the less frequently seen haloes, further oou from the sun, about equal distance from the 22° halo is the supralateral arc. The 46° halo is the rarest halo visible in this display although it is very faint it can be seen as a pale patch of colour just underneath the circumzenithal arc, it shows up more clearly in my photo's the colours are in reverse to the Circumzenithal arc and you can see that the supralateral arc contacts the CZA whereas the 46° halo section is separate from it.. There is a very pale concave band of light above the Upper Tangent arc, this might possibly be a Suncave Parry arc. So, what is the cause of all these arcs and halos? well I am no expert but I can give a very simplified explanation, it;s down to tiny ice crystals refracting light high in the atmosphere, depending on the shape and the orientation of the crystal, and the altitude of the sun will give rise to the different halos.
