The stream has a rich history that dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), but it was covered by a concrete freeway in the 1950s as part of the city's rapid development. In 2003, the city government launched a major urban renewal project to restore Cheonggyecheon to its former glory. The freeway was demolished, and the stream was uncovered and revitalized with walking paths, bridges, and water features. The project was completed in 2005, and since then, Cheonggyecheon has become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Today, Cheonggyecheon is not only a beautiful natural oasis in the middle of the bustling city, but it also serves as a symbol of the city's commitment to sustainable urban development.
