Abū Yusuf Ya'qub ibn Yusuf ibn Abd al-Mu'min al-Manṣūr (Arabic: Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Yusuf ibn Abd al-Mu'min al-Mansur; died January 23, 1199), commonly known as Yaqub al -Mansur (Yaqub al- Mansur ) or Moulay Yacoub (Mawlay Yaqub)), was the third Almohad caliph. Succeeding his father, al-Mansur ruled from 1184 to 1199. His reign was characterized by an increase in trade, architecture, philosophy and science, and by successful military campaigns during which he managed to push back the Reconquista in the Iberian Peninsula.
Al-Mansur's father was killed in Portugal on July 29, 1184; when he arrived in Seville with his father's body on August 10, he was immediately proclaimed the new caliph. Al-Mansur swore to avenge his father's death, but fighting with the Banu Ghaniya caused him to spend some time in Africa. After defeating the Banu Ghaniya again, he left for the Iberian Peninsula to avenge his father's death.
On July 13, 1190, the siege of Tomar, the center of the Portuguese Templars, could not capture the fortress. However, further south, in 1191 he captured a large fortress, Paderne Castle on the border near Albufeira, in the Algarve - controlled by the Portuguese army of King Sancho I since 1182. city, he returned to the Maghreb with three thousand captive Christians. However, when Al-Mansur returned to Africa, the Christians of the Iberian Peninsula resumed their offensive, capturing several Moorish cities, including Silves, Vera and Beja.
When Al-Mansur heard this news, he returned to the Iberian Peninsula and defeated the Christians again. During this time, many were rounded up in groups of fifty, and sold to Africa as slaves.
When Al-Mansur was in Africa, the Christians mounted a large army of that time, numbering more than 300,000 men, to defeat Al-Mansur. However, immediately after hearing this, Al-Mansur returned to Iberia again and defeated the army of King Alfonso VIII of Castile at the Battle of Alarcos on July 18, 1195. Al-Mansur Mansur's army is said to have killed 150,000 people. and took it. leave money, valuables and other property "not counting." It was after this victory that he received the title of al-Mansur Billah ("God made victorious").
