Thousands of hopeful football fans packed into Pretoria's main square to hear the FIFA announcement by live video link up on Thursday. But helped by a surprise abstention, Franz Beckenbauer, the former soccer star who headed the successful bid, pulled off another great World Cup fightback for Germany. The result ends a South African dream of bringing the championship to Africa for the first time in 2006. South Africans convinced they would host the 2006 World Cup soccer tournament, reacted with shock and disappointment on Thursday when FIFA, the sport's governing body, awarded the tournament to Germany. Bookmakers in South Africa were so sure the country would get the World Cup that several closed the betting. The entire country, even the small minority not interested in soccer, rallied behind South Africa's bid. Newspapers had countdowns to Thursday's announcement on their front pages. State television newscasters did away with their business attire to wear bid tee-shirts. Thousands of people gathered at street parties, ready to celebrate the announcement carried live on television and shown on giant screens at the rallies. The result stunned the crowds. Rejection of the South African bid was seen here as another bitter message from the rest of the globe about Africa's place in the world. The South Africans campaigned throughout that it was Africa's turn and they clearly had the support of the FIFA president. In a neck and neck finish, South Africa and Germany were tied 11-11 going into the third round of voting by FIFA's executive committee. But in the end Germany won through with a 12-11 victory over long-time favourite South Africa.
