This harsh, unforgiving landscape makes Aksai Chin one of the world's most inhospitable regions. The roots of the India-China border dispute over Aksai Chin can be traced to historical ambiguities and differing interpretations of ancient treaties. India argues that Aksai Chin was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir when it acceded to India in 1947. Conversely, China claims historical sovereignty over Aksai Chin, citing ancient maps and trade routes as evidence. The most significant episode in the Aksai Chin dispute occurred in 1962 when a brief but intense war erupted between India and China. The conflict resulted in a military victory for China, which gained control over Aksai Chin and a substantial portion of the disputed territory. However, both sides eventually agreed to a ceasefire, albeit without a formal resolution of the border dispute.
