When it comes down to drumhead choice, the type of film, its thickness, the ply construction of the drumhead and its finish contribute a lot to the overall attack color, decay dynamics and timbre of your drum sound. As an experiment, we took 3 drumheads with similar specifications (2-ply, 7 mil, clear film) from the 3 main drumhead manufacturers (Aquarian, Evans, Remo) and tuned them identically, in an attempt to better understand their acoustic differences. To perform this test as objectively as possible, we used the same drum, room, mic and mic position. We kept the drumhad at the resonant side at the same lug pitch, and swapped the batter sides. Then we tuned the swapped drumheads with the aid of Drumtune PRO to ensure that they were properly cleared to match the same fundamental tone and lug pitches in every recording. Using Drumtune PRO resulted in a repeatable sound and even tuning results, repeatedly and consistently, regardless the brand of the drumheads. Even while we were using drumheads of different brands, the overall sound and acoustic characteristics were very close to one another at a consistent tuning, due to theirphysical similarity in ply construction and film type. We could notice subtle differences in attack, timbre and decay dynamics between the 3 brands. This video shows the results of the test for you to check out too.
