The job cuts were announced on Wednesday and are part of President Javier Milei’s aggressive campaign to slash spending. The workers demanded that the government hire those who were dismissed. The government responded by calling the anti-riot police to prevent the picketers from reaching workplaces in their attempt to occupy government offices. Workers and pensioners have staged several protests since Milei took office in December. Milei maintains that the Argentine State is oversized and that it is necessary to cut jobs to maintain zero deficit.
