I ranked every troop in Art of War Legions on a tier list from best to worst. I’m also going to share a tier list made by the leader of the Royals clan, Jon Doe, and read his notes about why he ranked some troops the way he did.
Jon Doe's Tier List:
Golems (These remain the strongest single unit in the game. Their AOE stun makes them versatile for any type of form. One of the few troops where you pretty much always want more)
Goblikazes (Like Magic apprentices did when they first came out, Kazis will completely alter the meta landscape. Even if they won't be the single most powerful unit, players will be forced to adapt their formations around countering and utilizing them)
Demons (Like golems, demons are useful in almost all formations. While not as strong 1 to 1 as golems, they are critical in formations that rely on back row attackers to take down powerful enemy heroes.)
Peltasts (Too early to place these confidently, but it is clear that Peltasts will be a very important troop in the post 2.8.5 meta. Their penetrating attacks and ramp up ability will help decide many close battles.)
Sanctuary swordsmen (Too early to fully explore their usage, but preliminary testing suggests that they won't be as dominant as golems. However, their ability helps them avoid damage from powerful heroes. Potentially best used to chew up MAs and ghosts in the back.)
Undead Soldier (The most versatile, and one of the most accessible, 9 count troops in the game)
Beastmaster (Often underrated with good abilities and high health, but outclassed by golems.)
Magic Apprentices (Essential back row attackers for pretty much any formation)
Harbingers (Even after a slight damage reduction, harbingers AoE damage makes them crucial to countering formations that use lots of 9 count troops, especially if you use Davison)
Totems (Like beastmasters, totems are better than most troops, but are inferior to the s-tier legends. Its ability is too slow and its health is too low to really shine)
Paladins (Not as dominant as they used to be, but still very valuable as a tankier choice than undead soldiers. Best used in moderation.)
Ice Mage (Though not strong in most formations, ice mage has a narrow niche in top-level Zeus and Selene formations because of its powerful ability.)
Pilgrims (Can be used effectively in Davison formations, and critical to high scores in honor hunting)
Archers (Can be used to good effect in some arena formations, and very valuable for honor hunting. Unambiguously the best common troop)
Ghost Assassins (Weaker than magic apprentices currently, but still good in the arena and very valuable for honor hunting)
Soul Reaper (Of the single count epic troops, Soul Reaper is probably the strongest, with good survivability and attack)
Templar Knight (Not strong enough to be an ideal choice for any formation, but still useable in Ivan, Poseidon, and Zeus formations to help clean up swarms of enemies)
Yasha (Another mediocre epic that is good enough to be used, but not strong enough to be sought out)
Cactuses (Too early to have fully explored, but its powerful ability doesn't seem like it will make up for its low health. Could be better than expected.)
Brawlers (Seem entirely unremarkable, but it is too early to deem them unusable. Could be better than expected)
Preist Mage (Significantly better than fire mage, but the range of its ability is too short to make it worth using)
Inquisitor (Recently buffed, but weaker than other rares still)
Inquisitor (Even with a buff, they remain weaker than other rare 9 count options.)
Bandits (Decent, but not the best at anything)
Ballista (Maybe too harsh of judgment, but its slow attack rate and low health as a single count ranged troop will prevent it from being used successfully in a range of formations)
Catapult (Once dominant, the catapult is too slow for a fast meta with lots of stuns)
Viking Warrior (Doesn't bring anything special to the table. Buff is too little too late)
Hell Jailer (Will always have the potential to have a niche use because of its unique movement pattern, but no one has found one for the current meta)
Ogre Warrior (Hasn't aged well with the introduction of stronger one count epics and powerful 9 count rares)
Fire mage (Low health and mediocre damage output means that fire mages have minimal impact in the arena)
Scholar (Its ability provides minimal value in the current meta, so little more than a slightly weaker fire mage)
Necromancer (Even after being buffed to spawn four skeletons at once, it is difficult to defend choosing necromancer over any rare 9 count troop.)
