| Video Discription | As you rotate the wire handle the Doll moves both in a straight line and also circles around. To make this Circling Doll you need a plastic lid with a stiff straw, wire, double J hook, nut and a card doll. First make a small hole in the center of the lid and press fit a 3-cm long stiff straw. Then tape the Card Doll on the rim of the lid. See the assembly of the lid, straw and doll. Then wind 40-cm of stiff wire on a cylindrical pen or syringe to make a spring. Remove the spring and pull out its ends to make a long SPIRAL. Insert two old ball pen refills on both ends. These will make excellent bearings. Also bend the right end of the wire to make a HANDLE. Now place both the ball pen pieces on the lids of two similar bottles. Tape the refills on the lids such that the SPIRAL is horizontal. The handle should turn freely. Hang the double “J” hook on the spiral. Weigh down the hook with a steel nut. Then place the lower end of the straw in the lid, on the hook. The assembly is now complete. As you rotate the handle the Doll will move linearly from right to left. At the same time the Doll will keep circling continuously. In this variation the Spiral is mounted on two vertical spokes. This fun mechanism can be made with surprisingly simple materials.
