| Video Discription | The government of Assam has announced earlier this month that all state-sponsored Madrassas in Assam will be closed down. Private enterprises sponsoring madrassas are not being targeted which is why this can not be termed in any way move to target Islamic institutions. The logic is that the state should not be sponsoring religious institutions and previous congress govt had allowed them to thrive for Muslim appeasement. BJP govt is clear that both state-sponsored Madrassas and Sanskrit Tools will be closed down But the devil is always in the details and here again to call the state-sponsored madrassas religious institutions would be a Fallacy. For starters let’s make an important distinction here- the government madrassas actually impart mainstream education and are aligned to state board education except including one paper of Quranic studies. The High madrassa pass outs are equivalent to high school pass outs and they go into mainstream colleges. Unlike private madrassas where only religious and Islamic education is part of the curriculum. And the pass outs only become clerics. If at all the idea is to close avenues of religious indoctrination etc, its this private madrassa that needs regulation and monitoring. In fact, the Junior madrassas or ‘Maktabs’ often have a very large percentage of kids from other religions. The ratio is generally 60:40 (Muslims and non-Muslims) but some academic years this ratio have even got reversed with more non-Muslim kids in a classroom. A case in point is the centuries-old Jorhat Maktab school where even former chief minister Tarun Gogoi was a student for a few years. If the intention of the BJP is actually to close state-sponsored religious education, why were they waiting for the fag end of their tenure, right ahead of state elections next year? This raises questions on whether this issue is tossed into the public domain on and off for political mileage.
