The ruling Awami League won the election -- which was no surprise; the main opposition boycotted the vote. However it is the widespread unrest which is in the spotlight. At least 21 people were killed in separate attacks on Election Day, adding to the more than 100 who have died in recent weeks. Voting was stopped at around 400 polling stations and police say they were forced to fire at opposition protestors several times. Fewer than half of the 300 parliamentary seats were contested. The Awami League won a two-thirds majority including the unopposed seats. Initial figures show voter turnout was particularly poor compared to elections in 2008, many voters saying they fear being attacked.
