| Video Discription | This is a video of the making of "Q" - a 3lb combat robot ringspinner. Q features an invertible design and a 2x4wd brushless drive system. The S7 tool steel ring is powered via a friction drive and is held in place with 18 urethane-coated ball bearings. This video shows some of the design aspects to Q and the making of various parts. Q was fought at the 2019 Motorama combat robot competition. It had one win and two losses. The Achilles heel of the design turned out to be the weapon friction drive. In one fight there was too much friction and I burned the weapon motor out. In another fight, there was too little friction and I lost weapon drive completely. The weapon drive did function well in one fight, which it won. I think for this design to work you need some sort of compliance mechanism in the weapon drive system, such as using a spring to actively push the weapon motor against the weapon. Relying on friction alone is not promising given that friction changes with heat, wear, etc. (and the ring gets quite warm when it's being spun).
