| Video Discription | Henry “Bill” Warner and John Middaugh give new meaning to the closeness forged among the “band of brothers.” Both are 73-year-old, Purple Heart winning army veterans. They first met in March of 1968 during infantry training in Colorado. Several months later they fought side by side in the jungles of Vietnam. As John recounts the experience, Bill and John relied on each other for their lives on more than one occasion. Although Bill lives in New York and John lives on the west coast, the two friends remained in touch over the years, speaking frequently by phone and seeing each other at reunions. In June of 2014, following heart bypass surgery, Bill’s kidneys failed, requiring that he go on dialysis. He desperately needed a kidney transplant. After an unsuccessful search for a compatible donor, John took the opportunity to repay his lifelong buddy. Nearly 50 years later, in November of 2015, John gave Bill one of his kidneys. Together, Dr. Sandip Kapur, Chief of Transplant Surgery and Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Programs, and Dr. Joseph DelPizzo, Director of Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery for the Department of Urology, performed the successful kidney transplant surgery at NYP/Weill Cornell.
