| Video Discription | The third edition of the International Seminars - PPG Ecologia UFRGS with Prof. Dr. Helge Bruelheide. Summary: Effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning (BEF) have been found for numerous ecosystems and most BEF experiments have demonstrated that BEF effects are positive. More recently, such effects have also been shown for forest ecosystems. One example is the BEF-China experiment, which was established in 2008 in subtropical China (Xingangshan, Jiangxi Province). I here analyse the mechanisms behind the BEF relationship, ask how these different levels are linked to each other and whether these links contribute to ecosystem functioning. These mechanisms include 1) trait identity, allowing certain species to outperform others, 2) niche differentiation, brought about the by divergence in functional traits among species and resulting in an increased resource use efficiency and/or an increased proportion of resources captured, 3) reduced competition and increased facilitation, 4) decreased apparency and dilution effects of herbivores and pathogens of hosts and 5) increased top-down regulation of negative interactions. The talk will demonstrate that several of these mechanisms occur in parallel and that the net effects on ecosystem functioning are not simply additive effects. One important message will be that it is necessary to better understand complex trophic links to achieve a deeper mechanistic understanding of positive BEF relationships in general. QpVMtpNr0kE |
