Join me in the fourth annual Single Seed Challenge. It's a new year, it's a new challenge. The Single Seed Challenge exists for gardeners to slow down and challenged themselves to contemplate the life of a single plant. Starting with a single seed and nurturing that plant throughout entire life process, we document our Single Seed Challenge as we go at whatever milestones we choose. It is a social project as well. By putting the hashtag #SingleSeedChallenge2024 in your video description, your video, then becomes linked to everyone else's Single Seed Challenge. By using the hashtag, we can all enjoy one another's efforts.
- Timeline: Any season that ends in 2024 (grow your single seed to maturity by the end of the year)
- Goal: to grow only one seed, documenting it from sowing, through its major growth stages, fruiting, finally to its demise.
- Method: Select a single seed of your choice, germinate it how you wish (indoors, in ground, whatever), plant it out, tend it, follow progress in your videos. Document your single seed periodically in videos on your YouTube channel as you go.
- Mutual Benefit: This project is social. It gives our viewers opportunities to track the progress of yours and others' single seed. It also gives participants opportunities to place one another’s channels before our viewers multiple times. Mentions, shout-outs, links in the description, or cards are all possibilities. It is, of course, all up to you how often or even IF you mention others involved in the challenge.
Video ideas:
- Seed selection, showing the one seed you choose, talking about why you chose it, variety, and sowing.
- First germination and growth over a few weeks
- Planting out and maturation, tending, fertilizing, pruning, etc.
- Fruiting and harvest, taste test
- Plant’s decline, if applicable, and thoughts overall.

Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!
