Though it is exclusive to plants, it has implications throughout the natural world. Without it, the ecosystem would become unbalanced, the food chain would collapse and life would eventually cease to exist. Photosynthesis is a biochemical process where green plants and certain autotrophic microorganisms use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen and glucose. Glucose is used up for cellular activities while oxygen is the by-product of this process. Carbon dioxide enters the plant through the stomatal pores (typically present on the underside of the leaves). Water and other essential minerals are taken in through the plant's roots. The actual process of photosyntheisis reaction occurs at the leaves in the presence of sunlight through a cell organelle called the chloroplast. The chloroplast contains a pigment called chlorophyll, which traps the light energy and converts the carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Oxygen, as stated earlier is a by-product of this process. Glucose is the energy currency that is used by the plant for all of its cellular activities such as growth and repair. Photosynthesis Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2 Furthermore, chlorophyll is responsible for the green colouration observed in plants. The pigment absorbs only deep blue and red colours while reflecting the other colours from the visible light spectrum.
