| Video Discription | Cathartics are drugs used to relive constipation by defecation of stool from the bowel or which are used to clean bowel. Difference between Laxative and Purgative Laxative (Mild Cathartics or Mild Purgative): Increase Intestinal movement, Increase Bulk. Purgative (Strong Cathartics/ Purgative): Stronger action, resulting in more fluid evacuation e.g. Magnesium sulphate, Sodium orthophosphate, Kaolin and Bentonite. Cause of Constipation: Change of environment. Emotional tension. Improper diet. Lack of physical exercise or work. Side effects of drugs Too little water or other fluids intake. Care/ Remedies of Constipation By increasing more roughage in the diet, including fresh fruits . Prunes containing natural laxatives (e.g. whole grain cereals, leafy vegetables like spinach, raw carrots, cucumbers, salads, figs, papaya, water melon, etc.). More water More physical work Use of Cathartics Cathartics are used: To ease defecation in patients with painful haemorrhoids or other rectal disorders and (Laxative) To avoid excessive straining and concurrent increase in abdominal pressure in patients with hernias. (Laxative) To avoid potentially hazardous rise in B.P. during defecation in patients with hypertension, (Laxative) To relieve acute constipation (Laxative) To remove solid material from intestinal tract prior to certain roentgenographic studies. Before or after surgery of any anorectal disease. (Laxative) In bedridden patients. (Laxative) To flush out worms after the use of an anthelmintic drug. (Purgative) Food/Drug poisoning. (Purgative) Classification Cathartics Mild Purgative or Laxative: are those which promote defecation causing minimum adverse effect. (i) Bulk-Forming Laxatives: promote evacuation by increasing the stools bulk-volume and water contents. Mechanism of action and Side effect of Bulk forming Laxative. (ii) Osmotic Laxatives: Mechanism of action and Side effect of Osmotic Laxatives. (iii) Stool Softeners (Emollient): Which penetrate, lubricate and soften the stool. Mechanism of action and Side effect of Stool Softeners (Emollient). Purgatives or Strong Purgative: cause complete evacuation of the bowel and become inactive (atonic).
