| Video Discription | Demonstration of a Maltese Cross anode blocking electrons from striking a glass surface at the front of a cathode ray (Crookes) tube. This shows that electrons travel in straight lines. The glass gets saturated by the electrons so when the aluminium anode (the cross) is flipped out of the way a positive image is produced as the electrons strike the fresh glass surface and glow more brightly than the saturated surface outside of the original shadow region. The fluorescence is caused by Mn2+ ions in the glass. It is a pale pink ion that is used to mask the presence of the green-yellow impurity Fe2+ in glass from the iron oxide in the raw materials.
