| Video Discription | A lot of women want to know what they should do when they miss a period. And one of the most common causes of a missed period is pregnancy. And that's a very easy cause to either rule out or confirm when that day comes when you should have a period and it doesn't start. So, Step 1, take a home pregnancy test after a missed period, and if it's negative, wait another 5 to 7 days, and if you still haven't started bleeding, then take another test. It is possible to get false negative results if you take the test too early. And sometimes, even the day of your missed period is a little bit too early, depending on the time when you ovulated during your cycle. If you're still seeing negative results 6 weeks from your last period, then it's pretty safe to say that you're not pregnant. And there are other things that can cause a woman to miss a period or to have irregular cycles. The best thing to do is to continue to track your bleeding patterns, and if you go a total of 3 months without a period, or you have spotting in between, or you have heavy periods, you have other symptoms that are concerning to you, then call your doctor. They'll ask you more specific questions, perform an exam, and then decide if further investigation or treatment is necessary. They'll consider causes like hormone imbalances, endocrine problems like polycystic ovarian syndrome or thyroid problems. Certain types of medications can cause you to have irregular cycles, including types of birth control, so they'll ask you about your medication history. Pelvic organ problems can also be the cause, as well as something as simple as the fact that you recently went on a vacation, you're under stress, you were recently sick - those can all throw it off. Maybe you've had a recent weight loss or weight gain that was excessive - that can also affect your cycles. If you are an endurance training athlete, that can make it so that you don't have regular periods. So your doctor will ask you more specific questions about your lifestyle, medications that you're on - some types of birth control can make your periods irregular, and women didn't know that when they got put on it, so they're baffled as to why they're not having regular cycles.
