| Video Discription | I have gotten the question about compensation as a CFA charterholder. Here is an honest look at the average compensation for charterholders, and how the CFA has changed my personal pay. There is a pretty wide salary range among CFA charterholders. The topic today is from a question that I have gotten several times over the past couple of months, which is how much money do you earn as a CFA charter holder! Talking about salary or income can be a bit taboo but I’m excited to do this one just because career advancement is certainly one of the core reasons that people pursue the charter. People share a lot about how the CFA charter has added to their knowledge about the markets and investing, or maybe how it has impacted their perspective towards ethical questions, but the topic of compensation is probably underrepresented. My goal for this video will be to give an honest look into compensation through each step of the CFA program, share some data on this topic, and also speak to my personal situation through each level of the CFA. To take it from the top, when I started studying for level 1, I was not making a lot money. It was certainly more than minimum wage, but also a bit less than I was hoping to be earning when starting out my career in finance. And just to speed this story along my compensation didn’t change throughout the first year of studying, or after passing level 1. During this period I did have some bonuses for passing the licensing exams here in the United States which was great, was it was not related to my performance in the CFA program. I also think my experience through Level 1 was pretty representative of most other candidates. I haven’t heard of or read too many accounts of people getting pay raises after passing level 1. About 9 months after that, when I was well into my L2 studying, my compensation started to increase. There were some changes taking place at the company I work for, and I was really in the right place at the right time. During some of these changes, I was able to negotiate a raise, and then another raise if I were to pass level 2. I need to be clear that this will work out differently for everyone... Even folks on the same career path at the same company, have reported differences in compensation throughout each level of the charter. This could be due to performances differences, personal favorites, or just good luck and timing. And to be honest, I feel like I was able to benefit from all 3 of these factors during that time in my career. Again, everyone’s journey will look differently. I had several different things going on during my 3 years of study that were also impacting my compensation. But having the CFA charter definitely helped along the way. The institute releases data each year about compensation for CFA charterholders. They simply poll all the charterholders, and usually receive about 15,000 responses. The CFA institute doesn’t realease this information publicly, you need a login for their website to view it. For this reason I’m not going to link the 2019 results, but I will share some of the information.
