Dev, my husband decided to jump in and play the Elathalam with us, while my father joined in with Chenda as well, all this took me by surprise and my day couldn’t have been any better! I was 12 when an organisation was attempting to form the first ladies' Shinkari Melam team in the UAE. I hail from Kerala and have been living in the UAE since childhood. Chenda is one of the most popular instruments among Kerala’s instrumental music forms. I remember when we used to come to India, my brother and I would watch artists play Chenda faultlessly, for hours. My family and I were overjoyed when the team invited me to join them. I was fortunate to learn patiently from my teacher Shyju and soon started performing all across the U.A.E. I feel immensely blessed to have gotten such great support from my family to venture into and explore a majorly male-dominated art form. Chenda being so close to my heart, I wanted it to be part of my special day. So I decided to surprise Dev, my husband who I met in the most unexpected way while organising a dance competition. I didn’t expect that the person who quarrelled with me about deadlines for a song submission will soon be the one I get married to. The performance was a huge surprise for everyone present there! Unexpectedly, Dev couldn't stay still as he was ecstatic and joined us right away. My father was also thrilled and decided to join in and celebrate.
