The national security law will criminalize any opposition to the Chinese government in the form of ‘treason, secession, sedition and subversion.’ It also allows the Chinese gov’t to create their own police force in the territory. The controversial law has been in discussion for more than a week. Days of large scale protests against the bill in Hong Kong have resulted in hundreds of arrests. There have been clashes between police and protesters as well as several physical clashes in the country’s parliament. Now that it’s approved, the parliament will move on to drafting the law.
