Watch as we demonstrate simple yet effective techniques to teach your dog an alternative behaviour that is incompatible with jumping and running towards the door. Safety is a top priority, especially if you're practicing this at your front door. We recommend having your dog on a leash or using baby gates to create a safe space in case they try to dash out. Chirag starts by selecting a behaviour that is incompatible with being at the door, in this case, standing on a designated blue bed away from the door. The key is to reward the desired behaviour with something that motivates your dog to repeat it. Gradually, we introduce the door handle movement, rewarding the dog for staying on the bed while we manipulate the door handle. We emphasise the importance of going at a pace that ensures success, stepping back a few stages if the dog struggles. By using treats, we encourage the dog to stay on the bed longer, as sniffing promotes relaxation. This creates an opportunity for a calm entry into the house. As we enter, we continue to provide treats to help them acclimatise to our presence. This method allows the dog to focus on the treats rather than becoming overly excited or jumping up. By employing these simple and kind techniques, you can make a positive impact on your dog's behaviour, creating a safer and more relaxed environment for both you and your furry friend.
