| Video Discription | Today we're climbing with somebody I've learned from during my entire journey! My close friend & climbing partner Brian Nguyen! Over the years I've learned a lot of climbing tactics from climbing with him. There's 8 specific climbing techniques that you'll need if you want to excel in this form of climbing. An earlier cut of the video had them on screen, but it became pretty difficult to comprehend because it all moves so fast - so I'll list them and explain them here. Techniques for Climbing on Overhang - 1. Heel Hooks - Seen at 1:03 & 1:23 An absolute essential technique for climbing on any terrain. You place your heel on a hold and apply force as if you're pulling your heel towards your glutes. Rotating your Toe towards the outside of your knee helps apply more force here. A strong heel hook unlocks endless amounts of climbing, so be sure to practice them when they appear. 2. Toe Hooks - Seen at 1:10 and quite often throughout the video Placing the top of your Toe on a hold and pulling through that toe towards your knee to apply force to the hold. Depending on the angle of the Toe Hook, you may need to apply more or less force to make it stick, in the ideal situation it takes very little effort but removes a lot of weight from your upper body. 3. Bicycles - Not really seen in this video, but these first three are seen really easily at my short at this link - https://youtube.com/shorts/FntSX3qGPmQ For Bicycles you apply toe pressure to a hold that you're also Toe Hooking, this move is incredibly useful on overhangs especially when you need to move past a good Toe Hook. You can also apply this move on different holds, using the counter pressure to really stick to the wall via your lower body. 4. Back Flag Seen at 1:06 & 3:35 Creating a counterweight by extending your leg to create balance. Flags don't use a hold, they simply orient your body in a way that makes better use of other holds. It’s a “flag” when the leg extends to the same side as the foot, and a back-flag when it crosses the other leg. We're constantly flagging throughout the video - watch how our free leg always moves in a way that makes the other holds better! At 3:35 you can see how the backflag makes my right hand much more effective so I can reach out with my left. Now for some more advanced techniques - 5. Knee Bar - Seen at 1:59 You lodge your knee into your hold by applying force through your toe. This move is really powerful and in some cases you let your whole body hang from the knee bar and take a rest (although in bouldering that's not usually the case). Typically if a climb has the possibility for a knee bar it's an absolutely essential part of the climb because it's such a strong move. Some climbers are quite skilled at spotting kneebars and can make climbs way easier by implementing them. 6. Discus Swing Seen at 2:18 Letting go of a low handhold & swinging the arm to generate momentum. Works way better than you would think! This a really cool technique Dave Macleod covers in his book 9 out of 10 climbers. 7. Pogo (or Moon Kick) Seen at 2:23 Swinging a free leg in towards the wall to generate momentum. One of my favorite moves in climbing! The Pogo here isn't quite as pronounced as it is in other situations, but you can see that free leg is still helping to generate momentum. Typically the leg you swing corresponds with a hand that is too low to generate much force via pulling. 8. Campus - Seen at 5:06 Campusing is when you move from one hold to another without using feet. This uses up a ton of energy, but it's a viable strategy for some climbs. In this instance I lost my footing during a big move and instead of bringing my feet back to an earlier point of the climb (which would have been almost impossible), I progressed through to the next move in order to open up a heel hook opportunity. Although the ideal situation would have been to not cut feet, campusing was the only option after the feet cut happened. -- Brian took very naturally to Dynamic Climbing and Climbing on Overhangs. I have videos of him attempting V7 Dynos on Steep Terrain in our very first month of climbing together. Brian and I are both filmmakers and had briefly met at past events, but when we met at the climbing gym our first week it began a life-long journey. For the past few years we've made dozens of films and climbed hundreds of times. I think that without Brian, I would have doubled down on my naturally static and balancey style, but getting to climb with somebody that had such different natural strengths than me became an encouragement to work on anti styles throughout my journey - and now those anti-styles have become my favorite styles!
