| Video Discription | Presenter(s): Daniel Imler, MD Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to: - Understand the current evidence of clinical practice algorithms - Describe the potential problems and opportunities for learners with the increasing use of algorithms - Demonstrate competency in using algorithms as a teaching tool Clinical practice algorithms (aka pathways, decision trees, calculators) are becoming increasing common as they have been shown to improve clinical and operational outcomes. There has been the associated concern that with the standardization of clinical care, that learners may be missing out on the understanding of why these decisions are recommended and are blindly treating patients. Additionally, there is the concern that learners may thus be ill prepared for edge cases where the algorithms may not fit or have limited evidence. This interactive lecture will attempt to flip this perspective by providing a framework of using clinical practice algorithms as a teaching mechanism. This will include an interactive session where the audience will assume the role of the learner while we walk through case examples (polling, etc.).
