Overall, just over 11 per cent of shops were empty in October but in some areas that was much higher. One in five stores in Northern Ireland for example was vacant. The BRC said the numbers bode ill for a sector that is so vital to the economy. Consumer spending generates roughly two-thirds of GDP. There have been several high profile failures in 2012 like JJB Sports, Game and Clinton Cards, and though they all re-emerged in some form or another hundreds of stores have closed.
