After the Russian-Persian War in 1828, the area was ceded to the Russians. The formation of the Soviet Union brought chaos, with Nakhchivan being disputed by Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the Ottomans. In 1920, Vladimir Lenin established the Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, aligning it closely with Azerbaijan. Following the collapse of the USSR, Azerbaijan gained independence, and Nakhchivan became an autonomous republic within Azerbaijan. Despite this, Nakhchivan remains geographically separated from the rest of the country.
