Then I show the y-axis, x-axis and origin. I will then cover how to use the famous y = mx + b (or sometimes called y = mx + c) equation. Then I will discuss how the slope = m = rise/run = y2 – y1/x2 – x1 And how the y-intercept = b = where the line crosses the vertical axis. We will find the equation of a line: y = 3/4x – 3/2 You might also see this written as 4y – 3x + 6 = 0 This is called the ax + by + c = 0 version of the line. The x-intercept = where line crosses x axis = when y is 0 Parallel and perpendicular lines: If the slopes are the same, the lines are parallel. If the slopes are the negative reciprocal of one another, then they are perpendicular slopes. Which of the following lines are either parallel OR perpendicular to the line 4y – 3x + 6 = 0? Tick all that apply. y = 4/3x + 5 y = -4/3x + 6 (perp) 4y + 5 = 3x (parallel) 4x + 3y + 4 = 0 (perp) 4x – 3y + 5 = 0 Finally, I put this together in a question with multiple parts to test your knowledge.
