Cyclone Remal Live Updates: Cyclonic storm "Remal" is currently situated over the North Bay of Bengal, progressing northwards at a velocity of 16 kmph. The storm is anticipated to make landfall within the next few hours, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).
"The severe cyclonic storm "Remal" (pronounced as "Re-Mal") over the North Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards, with a speed of 16 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centered at 1730 hrs IST of today, the 26th May, 2024, over the same region near latitude 21.15°N and longitude 89.2°E about 125 km east-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal), 140 km southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 135 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal) and 155 km south-southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh)," IMD said in a statement.
Cyclone Remal LIVE: Over 1 lakh people in Bengal's coastal areas shifted to shelters
As a precautionary measure against impending severe cyclone 'Remal', the West Bengal government has evacuated over 1.10 lakh people from coastal regions, including the Sundarbans and Sagar Island, to secure shelters, a senior official said on Sunday.
To bolster these efforts, 16 battalions each from the state disaster management and NDRF have been deployed in the coastal areas, the official added."Evacuation efforts have concentrated on relocating 1.10 lakh people from coastal regions to safe shelters, with a significant number hailing from South 24 Parganas district, notably Sagar Island, Sunderbans, and Kakdwip," the official informed PTI.
Severe cyclone Remal will cross between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday midnight. Extremely heavy rain has been predicted in the coastal districts of West Bengal, north Odisha and parts of northeast India from May 26-28.
A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensified into severe cyclonic storm Remal and is expected to make landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh at midnight on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Remal, which means sand in Arabic, is the first pre-monsoon cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this season. The name was provided by Oman, following the regional naming system for cyclones in the north Indian Ocean.
According to the weather department, extremely heavy rainfall has been predicted in the coastal districts of West Bengal and north Odisha on May 26 and 27. Parts of northeast India may also witness extremely heavy rainfall due to the impact of Remal on May 27 and 28.
