Kissinger, who helped engineer the normalisation of U-S relations with China, predicts the economic reforms will continue with perhaps a parallel reform in government. Former U-S Secretary of State Henry Kissinger spoke briefly to reporters about events in China. Kissinger who has met Deng's successor, Jiang Zemin, said he thinks the new leadership will be "less dramatic". SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well I think that the Chinese leadership now, will be more, there will not emerge one overwhelming figure like Mao or Deng had been, that was the revolution. That was the generation that had made the revolution. Jiang Zemin was Mayor of Shanghai, he's an engineer by training, very jovial, intelligent as one would expect, but a man more of consensus, and one would therefore expect that it will be a less dramatic style of leadership." SUPER CAPTION: Henry Kissinger, Former U-S Secretary of State Kissinger also predicts a continuation of economic reforms in China, with perhaps a parallel reform in government. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It is almost inevitable that when you have economic progress that has been taking place, that a degree of centralisation and predictability in legal procedures will follow, and what this will evolve into later on is hard to predict, but it will certainly be in a direction of greater constitutionalism."
