When the species was first introduced to the hobby around the turn of the millennium, it was collected to such an extent that wild populations were compromised. But, realising that wild capture was unsustainable, the hobby started breeding programmes to satisfy the demand of a growing trade. Barb numbers rose in the wild. But the species still faces huge threats from sand-minding and pollution, and the barb has been listed by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as Endangered.
