We’ll begin by explaining the term “dermatome”, which is a combination of two Ancient Greek words; “derma” meaning “skin”, and “tome”, a “cutting” or “thin segment”. It is an area of skin which is innervated by a single dorsal root of the spinal nerve. As dorsal roots are organised in segments, dermatomes are as well. Next, we’ll get to know two different dermatome maps, the Keegan & Garrett and Foester maps. Once we have tackled this, we’ll discuss the dermatomes of the axial structures and limbs.
