Once the trail gets too hard, steep, or too difficult most people will turn around. If you want to find Solitude you need to be willing to go places others won’t. that means hiking harder or further than others are willing to go. Number Two: Get Wet Most people don’t like getting wet. So the deeper and more water crossings you are willing to make the less likely others are willing to go there. Which means more solitude for you. Just make sure the crossings are safe and you have the skills to cross safely. Number Three: Seek Lower Ground. Hikers love bragging rights! Have you ever been to the top of a 14er only to find a ton of people at the summit? They’re all there for the bragging rights. But 13ers have basically the same experience with none of the crowds. The same is true of other areas. So wherever you are…the hikes with the most bragging rights will also have the most people...so just aim a little lower if you want to find Solitude. Have you ever hiked a 13er to avoid the crowds? If so write 13 in the comments below. Number 4: Go in the middle of the week. Most people work Monday through Friday and can’t hike until the weekend. If you can take off in the middle of the week while others are only dreaming of hiking. Then the solitude is all yours. In the same way most people go hiking in the summer. Which means If you want miles and miles of trails all to yourself...then the best times to hike late in the fall....or early in the Spring. Number 5: Don’t be afraid to go out in the rain and snow. If you hike in the spring chances are you will encounter some snow...most people don’t like post holing or being cold...so they will stay home while you have the trail all to yourself. But be careful...hiking in the snow can require technical equipment and skill not every hiker has. So if you don’t want to mess with the snow but still want the trail to yourself go out in the rain. Check the the forecast and know others will too...if it is calling for rain...most hikers will stay home. Number 6: Think out of the box. Most areas are known for one particular type of landscape or another. If an area is known for its peaks...seek out its canyons. If it’s known for its alpine lakes…go looking for a few Rivers. No matter where you go think about what most people are looking for...and see if there is something different nearby. Number 7: Go off trail. This one is pretty obvious. 99% of all hikers are going to be on the trail...so any area off trail is going to offer plenty of Solitude. Just make sure you have the orienteering and cross country skills to get you to your destination and home safely. Do you like to hike off trail? If so drop me a comment below that says bushwhacking. Number 8 Do the Research Parks and ranger districts know where people like to hike and where they don’t. Give them a call and ask what their least popular trails are. In the same way you can always find National forests, Wilderness areas and even parks that don’t see the crowds other areas do...so do some research and see what areas get traffic which don’t.
