| Video Discription | On 30 November 1996, the Stone of Scone, also known as the Stone of Destiny and the Coronation Stone, was returned to Scotland some 700 years after it was stolen by the forces of Edward I during the English invasion of 1296. The stone has played a central role in the monarchical history of the British Isles. Before its theft from Scone Abbey, the stone was used as a seat in the coronation of the monarchs of Scotland. In the centuries since, it has performed the same role in the coronation of the monarchs of England and, later, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. In 1996, Prime Minister John Major announced that the Stone of Scone would be returned to Scotland, kicking off a period of consultation in which Scottish businesses and institutions were able to apply to become the new home of the stone. In the end, Edinburgh Castle was chosen, and Prince Andrew, Duke of York was sent on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II to perform the official handover ceremony. The authenticity of the Stone of Destiny has been repeatedly called into question over the centuries. Some believe the stone stolen in 1296 was not in fact the real Stone of Scone. Others say that a number of copies of the stone were made in 1950 when it was smuggled out of Westminster by Scottish nationalists before later being recovered, suggesting the stone sent to Scotland in 1996 could be fake. In 2023, the Stone of Destiny is returning to Westminster ahead of the coronation of King Charles III.
