| Video Discription | (28 Sep 1995) Bengal/Nat In India, the death sentence is carried out by hanging, and usually the hangman's job is a government appointment. But in West Bengal, the hangman's job is much more than that - it is a family tradition which has been passed down through the generations. The authorities at Calcutta's historic Alipur jail are bracing themselves to hang another criminal who has been sentenced to death. One man, in particular, is preparing himself for the day ahead - West Bengal's official hangman, Nata Mullick. This is his 25th assignment as an executioner and he takes pride in the tools of his trade. But the task doesn't get any easier. He says he explains to the person being executed that he is only doing his duty and asks for the criminal's forgiveness. SOUNDBITE: (Bengali) "I am like any other government official doing my duty. But I am human after all. Sometimes my heart aches to think what kind of a job am I doing. But I am forced to do it. If not me, someone else will do it. The work has to go on." SUPER CAPTION : Nata Mullick, Hangman But for Nata Mullick he is doing more than carrying out his civic duty - hanging is a profession that has been in the Mullick family for generations. His grandfather hanged the great martyr of the Indian independence struggle, Khudiram Bose. And his father Shivlal, who hanged more than 600 people, became famous when he hanged the legendary freedom fighter Surya Sen during the British Raj. Nata's sons are willing to carry on the legacy but only for more money and better job security. Even so, the family shares a firm belief that the death penalty is good for society. SOUNDBITE: (Bengali) "The killers and the criminals must get punished. Because they don't get harsh punishment, the rapes and murders of children and girls are increasing." SUPER CAPTION: Mahadev Mullick, son of Nata Mullick Nata tries to keep his sentiments separated from his work but coping with the killing of a fellow human is not always easy. SOUNDBITE: (Bengali) "After the execution I feel unwell for a few days. I cannot sleep, I cannot eat. I keep thinking why has this man committed such a brutal crime to get this punishment. And why do I have to be the instrument of his death." SUPER CAPTION: Nata Mullick, Hangman An important part of how he copes with his job is his solace in prayer. He said his religion and his prayers provide him some comfort from the horror of being a legalised killer.
