They first fly to Ecuador, which does not require visas for Chinese nationals. Then they head north through Panama's Darien Gap jungle to reach the US-Mexico border. They then turn themselves in to US authorities to lodge their asylum claims. According to Panamanian authorities, Chinese citizens were the fourth-largest group crossing the Darien Gap during the first nine months of 2023.
