He was taken to safety on a farm in Somerset County, England, away from the Blitz. He has slight dyslexia yet excelled in art classes all through high school. He was awarded a scholarship to attend Hammersmith School of Arts and Crafts, but when his father died when he was only 15, he dropped out and went to work as a caterer on the railroads. Then, in 1953, he was called up for national duty with the RAF. He's gotten hitched three times already. Two of his children came from his first marriage to Christine. Unfortunately, they decided to divorce. He later separated from the photographer wife, Joy McCullin, with whom he had a daughter. On a more intimate level, he struggled as well. His mental health suffered greatly as a result of his work in challenging areas. He went through a lot of stress and suffering. Despite this, he overcame several challenges and kept working toward his goal of becoming a photographer. The Journalist Photographer As part of his mandatory military service, he served as a photographer's assistant at the Suez Canal during the 1956 Suez Crisis. While stationed in Nairobi, he purchased his first camera, a Rolleicord, despite his failure to make it as a photographer in the Royal Air Force. His career took off after he captured pictures of a London gang in a bombed-out building. This was in 1958. His breakthrough as a photojournalist came after this picture appeared in The Observer. McCullin covered wars and natural disasters around the world as a foreign reporter for The Sunday Times Magazine from 1966 until 1984. Particularly lauded is his reportage on the Vietnam War and the situation in Northern Ireland. In 1968, he documented the Beatles' "The Mad Day Out" session with his now-iconic pictures. Despite earning a name for himself as a military photographer, he also dabbled in landscapes, still lifes, and portraiture for commission. He hasn't stopped taking striking photos or making documentaries about topics that show the world as it really is. Many big papers on war zones and humanitarian problems around the world have been authored by him. Some of his most famous works are as follows: His images of the Vietnam War's grim reality—its effects on soldiers and civilians alike—captured the anguish and devastation that war brought to the Vietnamese people. Biafra Civil War: He photographed the conflict in Nigeria between 1967 and 1970, revealing the hardships endured by civilians and the widespread starvation that resulted. The photographs he captured helped bring awareness to this humanitarian catastrophe all over the world. Urban violence, barricades, and British soldiers on the streets were just some of the scenes he captured in his striking photographs from the strife in Northern Ireland. He visited Lebanon in the midst of the civil war that raged there in the '70s and '80s. His pictures show the devastation, the displaced people, and the human cost of this terrible war.
