| Video Discription | Dr. Hess: My name is Al Hess. I’m an orthopedic surgeon who practices hand and upper extremity surgery at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. The practice of medicine and the practice of orthopedics in the upper extremities is very exciting to me. I love going to work every day. I really enjoy orthopedics. I don’t know what else I would do in life that would be this fun. (Laughs.)Male Respondent: Let’s see. Go like this. Dr. Hess: My patients are the number one reason to be here. If you don’t want to make your patients better, if that’s not the most important thing to you, then why are you here? (Laughs.) If you ask me what surgery I enjoy the most, of the upper extremity, what’s very technical, I would say the congenital surgery that I do. You see that there are only three fingers (01:00) and then there’s a thumb, but this used to be a finger, just like the other ones. The hand is such a complex system, and to be able to restore that and give patients back their ability to use their hands is very satisfying. I think that when you become a physician, you can make a difference in a lot of people’s lives, and you can also make a difference on the way medicine is practiced into the future. To be involved in teaching, to be involved in research, that’s exciting.
