| Video Discription | Viscosity is the most important property of lubricants that determines the operating conditions under which it can be used. To understand this, we first need to define viscosity, its basis and characteristics. Viscosity is the property of any fluid which is a measure of its resistance to flow. The steady state of flow of a liquid can be visualised to consist of a series of parallel layers moving one above the other. Fluids resist the relative morion of immersed objects through them as well as the motion of these layers with differing velocities within them, due to internal friction or viscous drag. Consider two layers of a Liquid separated by a distance / and moving with a relative velocity π, then force per unit area (F) required to maintain this velocity difference is given by F = \eta\frac v d where π is called the coefficient of viscosity and is constant for a liquid. If π = 1 unit (cm/s), then F = π. Hence, coefficient of viscosity is defined as the force per unit area required to maintain velocity difference of one unit in the fluid layers, which are unit distance apart. When viscosity is measured directly by measuring the force, it is known as absolute or dynamic viscosity and is expressed in centipoises. In lubricating oils, it is more common to exPress viscosity as kinematic viscosity, which is absolute viscosity divided by density of the oil being tested and is expressed in centistokes. Another way of measuring viscosity of oils is in terms of time required for an oil to flow through a standard orifice at a given temperature. This is expressed in Saybolt universal seconds (SUS). The function of lubricating oils is to form a liquid film between two moving or sliding surfaces. If the viscosity of the oil is too low, the resistance to flow between individual layers of lubricating oil is low, and consequently, excessive wear will take place. On the other hand, if the viscosity is too high, the resistance to flow between layers is high, and friction between layers increases.
