The incident occurred at around 9 pm on June 17 in Kangpokpi Town when the mob intercepted the bus during a check. The bus bearing registration No. MN-06-B0463 belonged to a Meitei individual and was carrying CRPF personnel stationed at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Kangpokpi who were recently deployed in the district following the Lok Sabha Election. According to an eyewitness, the irate mob first asked the CRPF personnel on board to evacuate the bus and then set it ablaze. The Kangpokpi police and fire tenders rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. A case has also been registered at Kangpokpi Police Station in connection with the incident. It is suspected that the bus has been torched as an act of retaliation to the burning of construction materials meant for Churachandpur district at Tronglaobi village under Moirang Police Station in Bishnupur District.
