Various, worshippers at mosque STORYLINE: Iraq's Shia muslims gathered at the Khadmiya mosque in Baghdad on Tuesday to offer prayers for the Eid ul-Fitr festival. There has been some confusion as to when Ramadan ended; Eid begins as soon as the new moon is sighted, but different sects have disagreed over when the moon was seen. Eid el-Fitr starts the day after the end of Ramadan, the holy month during which observant Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, sex and other worldly pleasures from dawn to dusk. The cleric leading prayers in Khadmiya told worshippers that although they were now free to express themselves, Iraqi Shias still had to contend with violence from the occupying forces of the Coalition. The three-day holiday of Eid is associated with family gatherings over lavish meals and gifts for children, especially clothes. Most Arab leaders usually pardon hundreds of prisoners in goodwill gestures to mark the holiday.
