There are many positive aspects to living in Colombia and I wish I knew a few things before committing to the decision of living in country. There is a learning curve to understanding how things work and a definite language barrier. Learning Spanish can be essential to surviving or thriving in this country. There are very low levels of English and it is critically important to learn and speak Spanish. There are many Spanish schools for English speakers in the major cities and I highly recommend you attend one to meet other expats and like minded individuals. Colombia is very culturally diverse. From city to city, you can identify the different cultures and regionalism. Medellin and the Paisa culture is near and dear to my heart because my wife Laura is a Paisa. We met in Medellin and were married in Laureles. The Paisa culture is so welcoming and good natured. Some of the nicest people I have met any where in the world have been from Medellin and Antioquia. Bogota has a distinct culture as well. My wife and I lived in Usaquen for about a year. Our baby girl was born in a hospital in the North of Bogota. So we consider her a Rolla (Rollo). From city to city, life can be so different.
