A kilogram of premium grade Oriental Beauty had a starting price of around NT$30,000 last year, though it has now more than tripled to over NT$110,000. The cost increase is due to heavy rainfall, which killed off the small green leaf hopper, a pest which feeds on the plant and enhances its quality.
