I recently went to Palermo and made a pilgrimage to the site of his assassination. Falcone was a leading anti-Mafia magistrate in the 1980s and ‘90s — a horrifically dangerous time in Italy when the Mafia made a direct challenge to the authority and very existence of the state. From the 1960s through the 1990s, a succession of troublesome magistrates, police, politicians, activists and journalists were murdered at the whim of the Mafia. For a time, society teetered on the brink. When a prosecutor in Palermo took too much interest in the criminal affairs of the Mafia he was killed; then, if his successor did not back down, he too was killed in a bloody, frightening cycle. The body count was as stunning as it was appalling. But rather than flee, Giovanni Falcone redoubled his efforts, digging deep into the Mafia. In particular he probed the powerful Mafia boss Salvatore Riina — nicknamed “The Beast” because of his use of outrageous violence. It was The Beast who ordered Falcone’s assassination. When Mr. Falcone arrived back in Palermo from Rome on May 23, 1992, the Mafia detonated a half-ton of explosives under the highway from the airport; the blast killed Mr. Falcone, his wife and three police guards. I was recently in Palermo, researching the murder of two Canadian mobsters and had a moment of contemplation at the side of the highway torn apart by the Mafia's bomb. The spot is now marked by twin granite columns, one on each side of the highway where the blast had been. The columns are etched with the names of those killed. Citizens routinely add flowers and messages of adoration. One spray-painted message says: “Thank you from my heart. You are the person most important to me in my life.” The assassination is a hugely important milestone in the fight against the Mafia. It marked not the power of the mob to kill but the resilience of the people to overcome; the resilience of the state and the men and women who replaced Falcone and continue his important work. While in Palermo, I also visited with Leonardo Agueci. He is the current head of anti-Mafia prosecutions here. In his fortified office in the courthouse, a picture of Falcone and another murdered prosecutor, Paolo Borsellino, hangs above his desk. It is a reminder — to Mr. Agueci and to his visitors — not so much of the danger of the Mafia but of the meaning of courage.
