He and his wingman were going to intercept a Russian aircraft. On those days, at least two intercept missions were taking place each week. That day, a Russian Tu-95 bomber was going to Cuba from Murmansk on a training sortie while flying close to Iceland. Both F-4 Phantoms approached the bomber, and then one jet performed an inverted barrel roll over the Russian bomber. But guess what? The pilot did this at the request of the Soviet bomber crews.
