| Video Discription | Before we left Meknes, we first visited the city of Fes, which is already in our itinerary. Even though our next destination is on the opposite direction to the South (Erfoud). Visiting the leather tanneries was one of our main reasons for wanting to go to Fez in Morocco. As we arrived, we don`t really have any idea where we can visit the tannery until we met a man, who offered us a tour. Tips: There are two option to visit the Tanneries in Fes 1. Watching from terrace "Viewing Point", which is for free 2. Walking inside the building where the tanners are working but you have to pay for a tour and it depends on you how much you pay them. *If you want to have a great and unforgettable experience visiting Tanneries in Fes, option 2 is the best, because there are more interesting to see inside the building than watching it only from the terrace. (see on my Video). Walking directly to where the tanners are working was a great experienced for us. The smell wasnโt as bad as everything Iโd read. It wasnโt pleasant but it wasnโt the worst we`ve encountered. There were two different kinds of vat: the skins are first put in the white ones which contain a mixture of water, limestone, and pigeon droppings. Yes, pigeon droppings! Apparently, pigeon poo contains ammonia (which accounts for the odour along with the wet animals skins) that softens the hides whilst the limestone helps to remove the hair. After a few days, the skins are washed and transferred to the brown dyeing vats to be coloured using natural products: cedar wood (brown), poppy flower (red), indigo (blue), henna (orange), mint (green), and saffron (yellow). Saffron is costly, so this dye is applied sparingly to individual skins which are then laid out to dry in the sun. #Morocco c0TgupsRnoU |
