Inge Mahn + Sujata Bhatt Exhibition Masters' Houses Dessau 28 June to 20 September 2020 In ihrer Arbeit „Hausen“ für das Haus Gropius in Dessau geht die Bildhauerin Inge Mahn von einer Beobachtung aus, die sie während ihres Aufenthalts in den historischen Meisterhäusern gemacht hat: „Die vielen Türen im Haus (über 30 insgesamt!) irritieren etwas, weil sie sich zum Teil widersprechen. Natürlich ist es gut gedacht, wenn jeder Raum mit dem Nachbarraum verbunden ist und alle Räume vom Flur aus erreichbar sind, aber die Vorstellung, dass sich mehrere Türen durch mehrere Menschen gleichzeitig öffnen, ist komisch, weil sie kollidieren könnten“, beschreibt Mahn ihre Erfahrung. Die Bildhauerin nimmt damit auch das Jahresthema der Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau in den Blick: „Habitat“ meint das Wohnen als kulturelle Praxis und nicht funktionale Planung, die häufig mit dem Bauhaus gleichgesetzt wird. Mit den Meisterhäusern widmete sich Sujata Bhatt der vielleicht berühmtesten Künstlerkolonie der 1920er Jahre. In den neu entstandenen Gedichten setzt sich die Lyrikerin besonders mit dem Verhältnis von Tier, Mensch und Architektur auseinander. Einen möglichen Zugang zu diesem Verhältnis fand sie in der Kunst: In einem Gemälde, das Paul Klee in seinem Dessauer Meisterhaus schuf. Inge Mahn (geboren 1943 in Teschen, im heutigen Polen) war Meisterschülerin von Joseph Beuys an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf und lehrte selbst über Jahrzehnte Bildhauerei, zuletzt an der Kunsthochschule Weißensee, Berlin. Seit ihrer Teilnahme 1972 an der documenta 5 in Kassel wurden ihre Arbeiten weltweit ausgestellt. Die Lyrikerin Sujata Bhatt (geboren 1956 in Ahmedabad) wuchs in Indien und den USA auf und studierte an der University of Iowa. Seit vielen Jahren lebt sie in Bremen. Ihre Gedichte bewegen sich ausgehend von ihrer Biografie zwischen den Kontinenten und verschiedenen Kulturen und Sprachen. With the Masters’ Houses in Dessau, Sujata Bhatt has dedicated herself to the perhaps most famous artists’ colony of the 1920s. In the newly created poems, Bhatt examines in particular the relationship between animals, human beings, and architecture.
