| Video Discription | Exactly ten years ago , on the 14th of July 2012 , the German - flagged containership MSC FLAMINIA caught fire after a series of explosions in its cargo holds during a voyage across the North Atlantic from Charleston in the USA to Antwerp in Belgium . Tragically the blast and fire resulted in the loss of four lives . A good Samaritan vessel picked up the remaining crew members , which abandoned the ship . The 300 - meter ship burned for several weeks , sending toxic smoke into the air and causing severe damage to the vessel . Due to the environmental hazard , the ship was denied a place of refuge for months before Germany finally agreed to accept her into Wilhelmshaven nearly three months after the first explosion . The court assigned the shipper and container operator liable for the explosion on the vessel and ruled that MSC was not responsible for the loss . As a result of the issue of finding a place of refuge , the European Union adopted new guidelines for ships needing assistance in January 2016.
