The Rolex 16610 Kermit
The Submariner 16610LV is the original green Submariner, pre-dating the Hulk 116610LV and the current-production ref. 126610LV.
Rolex introduced the original ref. 16610 in the late 1980s, featuring a 40mm Oyster case, 3-piece link Oyster bracelet, black dial, and black aluminum bezel.
It was among the first Subs to feature white gold surrounds on the dial and sapphire crystal, also making ref. 16610 one of the first modern Submariner references.
It wasn’t until 2003 that the green bezel Kermit hit the market, just in time to celebrate the Submariner’s 50th anniversary.
Like the original 16610, the Kermit featured a 40mm stainless steel case waterproof up to 1,000 feet, a uni-directional time-lapse bezel, and a three-piece link Oyster bracelet.
What sets it apart from its all-black predecessor are the bezel and dial.
The black aluminum insert was swapped out for vibrant green, and the black dial received larger “Maxi” hour markers.
This particular combination is special for many reasons.
First, it is the only instance of an aluminum bezel with a modern Maxi dial. Second, it is the first instance of a Maxi dial on any modern Submariner ever. Lastly, the Kermit was the very first stainless steel Submariner to feature a bezel that wasn’t black.
Since coming to market years ago, the Kermit’s value has absolutely skyrocketed. A Rolex that could once be found on the secondary market for under $10k now commands as much as $25k and even as much as $50k.
Adding a Rolex Kermit 16610LV to your watch box isn’t completely out of reach, though. There are also examples on the market for as low as around $15k.
Part of these insane price variations has to do with the fact that the Kermit was discontinued long ago. Rolex recently released a new version with a ceramic bezel and larger 41mm case that seems to have sparked some renewed interest in the green Submariner that started it all.
Of course, there is the most obvious reason, the bezel.
If you’re familiar with watch collecting, you know how much emphasis many avid collectors put on even the smallest details. Even the tiniest variation can equal big bucks on the secondary market, which is why it’s so important to pay close attention to these details when investing in one for yourself.
What is the Rolex Kermit Flat 4 bezel, anyway?
The bezel is topped with a 60-minute diver’s scale designed to allow the wearer to track immersion times and decompression stops while in the water.
“Flat 4” refers to the “40” numeral on the dial, specifically the shape of the “4.”
Flat 4 bezels feature a larger trapezoidal space in the middle of the 4, while sharp 4 bezels feature a smaller, more triangular-shaped space.
Flat 4 bezels also feature a flatter top, while sharp 4 bezels are more pointed.
Flat 4 bezels are worth significantly more than sharp 4 bezels because they were produced for a shorter time during the first few years of the Kermit’s production.
To complicate matters even more, if the original owner ever sent their Kermit in for servicing, Rolex likely replaced the bezel with the sharp 4 variant. As you can imagine, the already short supply of flat 4 bezels diminished in the years following its release.
There is one exception of some later production Kermits outfitted with a Flat 4 service replacement bezel, which seems to result from extra stock Rolex had lying around. Those have since all been exhausted, and the sharp 4 bezel remains the only replacement bezel option. 6XtTdx1g-GA |
