The space where 2 sutures join forms a membrane-covered "soft spot". (Types) • Posterior fontanelle: At the junction between the sagittal suture and lambdoid suture. Triangle-shaped. • Sphenoidal (anterolateral) fontanelle: Between the sphenoid, parietal, temporal, and frontal bones. • Mastoid (posterolateral) fontanelle: Between the temporal, occipital, and parietal bones. • Anterior fontanelle: Between the two frontal and two parietal bones of the developing fetal skull. Diamond-shaped membrane-filled. The bones are not joined together firmly at birth. This allows the head to change shape to help it pass through the birth canal. It also allows the brain and skull to grow during an infant's first year or so. The sutures gradually gain minerals and harden, firmly joining the skull bones together (ossification). (Closure) • Posterior fontanelle: 2-3 months. • Sphenoidal (anterolateral) fontanelle: 6 months. • Mastoid (posterolateral) fontanelle: 6-18 months. • Anterior fontanelle: 12-18 months.
